This stunning, handblown work of Swedish Modernist design art glass is by Vicke Lindstrand (b. 1904 - d. 1983), who was considered as one of the most influential 20th-century glass artists and a pioneer of glass art. This particular piece comes from a series of 5 objects designed by Lindstrand between 1955-1956 for Kosta (Boda) glassworks. Similar to Wirkkala's Kantarelli (Chantarelle) series that was released around the same time, Lindstrand's series focuses on the gentle exaggeration and stylisation of organic curves and stripes. But whilst Wirkkala chose to create physically grooved stripes on his works, Lindstrand chose to embed feathering threads of Deep Espresso into the body of his series.
These beautiful threads are in fact individual and separate but the prismatic quality that is typically found in Swedish crystal magnifies the bands to create a rolling effect in the stem. This magnificent piece stays true to the roots of Modernist design through the beautiful simplicity of form that speaks to an honest expression of the natural material.

A BIT OF HISTORY Vicke Lindstrand (b. 1904 - d. 1983) is considered as one of the most influential 20th-century glass artists and a pioneer of glass art. Lindstrand's prolific career included many design highlights, including his ability to excel at a technique called Cased Glass (known to many glass collectors as 'Sommerso'), in which a vividly coloured or patterned section of glass is surrounded by and seems to float within a clear crystal body.
Lindstrand's career began in commercial illustration before finding employment at the glass manufactory Orrefors. He would join Kosta Boda in 1950, remaining there until 1973. Beyond his commercial work, he also produced several massive public sculptures around the world. Today, his works are in many museum collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Kosta Boda is Sweden’s oldest glass company, founded in 1742 and began making art glass — that is, unique and limited edition pieces — with the hiring of the painter Gunnar Wennerberg in 1898. Kosta Boda enjoys a reputation as the country’s most artistic and experimental glassworks, featuring artists and sculptors.
There are few Kosta Boda designers who stand foremost in the minds of collectors, one is Vicke Lindstrand, who excelled at a technique of 'Sommerso', or cased glass.
This touch-inviting work of art pottery is by the famous English ceramic artist and Art Director of Newport Pottery, Clarice Cliff (b. 1899 - d.1972). This particular piece comes from the Raffia Indiana series by Cliff in 1936(-37) with the form and hand painted décor being inspired by Native American basketware.
The exquisitely tactile design came during a time when taste was towards heavily modelled ware. Cliff reflected this preference into the intricately ribbed ridges on the 8 concentric bands and the carefully painted décor of this dish. This design also came during the time of Cliff's successful breakthrough into international fame, where she received unprecedented publicity and when the phrase 'career woman' did not exist.
This refined piece is an excellent representation of Cliff's innate ability to bring forth and elevate the unique qualities in something that is otherwise seemingly simple. Stylistically timeless, the combination of the design with the colour palette and its condition makes it a particularly rare find.
CONDITION Excellent. There are no chips or repairs, or crazing. There is insignificant and ageing to the glaze that is commensurate with the age of the piece. A BIT OF HISTORY Clarice Cliff (1899 - 1972) Born in the city of Stoke on Trent that was made famous by its pottery in 1899, Cliff was working in one of the many factories by the time she was 13 and by the late 1920s she was designing the colourful pottery that would blossom her career. Her striking signature characteristics appeared in her use of colour, pattern and form design. Innovative and talented, she would go on to become Art Director for Newport Pottery in 1930.
Cliff became successful and internationally famous on an unprecedented level for a woman ceramic artist despite being known for being shy. Her colourful life and unmistakable skills in design are still being celebrated in modern day.

These elegant works of Art Deco design are by the British Pottery Crown Devon. The carved pitcher jug is Crown Devon's 'London' jug form with the '371' Caisson form vase. Both works are in a matching 'Polished Orange Jasper' glaze and are highly tactile; particularly the London jug with its most standout feature of the vase body swelling around the carved lines, making each section exquisitely touch inviting. The Caisson vase bears subtle geometric and mirroring Art Deco accents of raised stripes and handles.
The semi-matte Polished Orange Jasper silk glaze décor is a blending of Pale Peach dappled with Cinnamon and Espresso Coffee brown. The sumptuous glaze creates the effect of Polished Orange Jasper chalcedony gems. Both pieces are stylistically timeless and the combination of the designs, colour palette as well as the excellent condition makes them a rare find.

A BIT OF HISTORY Crown Devon Fieldings (1870 - 1982) The pottery was founded in 1870 by Simon Fieldings in Stoke on Trent but it would be 10 years later before they began to produce Majolica style pottery that was popular during the 1880s. Their product range began to expand in the 1890s, working with British United Clock company and they would continue to expand their product range as popularity flourished after successful world trade fairs in the 1900s. They sustained their success for over a century before sadly closing in 1982 at the time of the recession.
This striking work of 1930s Bauhaus Art Deco design is by Carstens Uffrecht Pottery and attributed to the then lead designer Hildegard Delius (b. 1896 - d. 1955).
The geometric Bauhaus influence is very evident in the evenly-arched, stylised architectural form and further accentuated through subtle plays of cross-hatching within the glaze décor. The sumptuous hand-painted glaze is a base of Vanilla cream that is overlaid with a palette of orange shades, including Apricot, Marmalade, Amber, and Ochre, and further elevated through deeper Coffee brown tones.
Whether on display or used around the home, this work is timelessly stylish in design yet also an excellent representation of the Bauhaus Art Deco movement.

A BIT OF HISTORY Carstens Uffrecht that was founded in 1845 by Jacob Uffrecht. After the Second World War, the Carstens family lost their ceramics and porcelain factories in East German territory. In 1945, Carstens Uffrecht became the East German vases maker VEB Haldensleben. VEB stands for the German “Volkseigener Betrieb”, meaning a people-owned enterprise and related to state-owned workplaces in the GDR.
Hildegard Delius (1896-1955) and her husband Klaus Delius were the known designers from the mid-1920s to mid-1930s at Carstens Uffrecht, echoing the architectural vision of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius.
VEB Haldensleben mainly concentrated on making vases of high quality. Like the vases of Strehla, the colours are more subdued than the vases from West Germany. Often there is at least one metallic glaze on the vases. When Germany was reunited in 1990, the former East German factory was again owned by the Carstens family and the name was changed to Carstens Keramik Rheinsberg.

This work of beautifully understated elegance is of Scandinavian mid-century design and by Upsala Ekeby's renowned artistic director, Arthur Percy (b.1886 - d. 1976). In this piece, Percy combines the gentle curves of the classic bottle flask form with a touch-inviting décor. The décor is built on a base of semi-matte clear glaze that highlights the natural Pale Buttermilk cream clay, this is then overlaid with a tessellation of tactile smooth and glossy Daisy white dots of glaze. The piece is finished with a striking contrast of semi-matte Natural Indigo blue on the interior of the vase.
The overall design is a seamless blend of simple sophistication, elevated elegance and Swedish mid century Modernist design.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. There are negligible movement marks to the underside of the base that is commensurate with the age of the piece as well as trivial flaws from the production process (e.g. a small number of white dots have picked up spots of the indigo pigment). A BIT OF HISTORY Carl Arthur Carlsson-Percy (b.1886 - d. 1976), a leading Swedish ceramist, artist and artistic director, born in Vickleby in 1886. During his early career, Percy travelled to Stockholm and Paris to develop his skills and techniques as a decorative painter, attending schools such as the Académie Collarossi and Matisse Painting School.
He would go on to become artistic director in 1923 at Gefle Porslinsfabrik (which became part of Upsala Ekeby in 1936) and in 1942 he became artistic director at Karlskrona Porslinsfabrik. His early work is characterised by items with soft decorations of flowers and birds and Italian 14th and 16th century inspiration.
During the 1920s, his renowned work includes the series "Gefle", "Vinranka", "Floating Blue", "Iris", "Three Flowers", "Silversties" and "Christina". During the 1930's and 40's came "Suecia", "Exotica" and his perhaps most famous décor "Rubin".
Percys art is represented in a large number of Swedish and foreign museums, including National Museum and Modern Museum, Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde, Art Museum in Gothenburg, and museums in Malmö, Norrköping, Lindköping, Västerås, Borås, Jönköping, Kalmar, Karlstad, Gävle and Östersund, etc. Abroad, one can find his art at the Sévres Museum in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Pau, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Metropolian Museum in New York and the Lubeck Museum in Germany and others.

This elegant work of Art Deco design is by the British Pottery Crown Devon. The pitcher jug form is seemingly simple but there are actually a number of subtle Art Deco design nuances incorporated into the design. The body is accentuated by the gently exaggerated curves at the belly and handle, with a finishing accent of a lightly fluted rim and spout. This beautifully biomorphic and handblown piece was designed Czech art glass designer Miloslav Klinger (b. 1922 - d. 1999) for Bohemian glassworks Zelezny Brod Sklo (ZBS). This particular piece is particularly rare as it combines Neodymium and Citrine glass using the Sommerso 'Submerged' technique.
This work is not only special in the abstract, organic form that creates elegant refractions - it also has the ability to colour change. The colour changing ability comes from Neodymium, an element incorporated into the glass during the crafting process. Under daylight, the Neodymium glass presents as a pale lilac colour however, under indoor fluorescent household lighting, the element becomes a pale blue. Neodymium glass is often known as Alexandrite glass.
The contemporary form of this piece is composed of a clear central chamber that is cradled as well as complemented by 3 Neodymium trails. The clear chamber is submerged into a Pale Lemon Citrine base and the work is finished with an accent of 'pulling' at the rim.
CONDITION Excellent, no chips or cracks or repairs. There is very mild surface wear that is commensurate with the age of the piece and most evident in movement marks on the underside of the base. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report.

A BIT OF HISTORY Miloslav Klinger (b. 1922 - d. 1999) Miloslav Klinger was born in Hrubá Horka near Železný Brod. After a year of apprenticeship in glass chandeliers with Josef Kleinert, Klinger studied at the Glass School in Železný Brod under the guidance of prof. Jaroslav Brychta and master Jan Stuchlík. After graduating, Klinger worked in Kleiert's company as a designer for two years. After completing his studies, Klinger returns to Železný Brod as a designer, where, apart from his brief career as director of the Glass School in Železný Brod, he remained throughout his life.
Zelezny Brod Glassworks Železný Brod is an old glass-producing town founded in the eleventh century. It was originally known as Brod ("ford") or Brodek ("little ford"). Železný ("iron") was added to its name in the fourteenth century, alluding to the town's steelworks. The town's main industry is represented by producers of blow-moulded glass, as well as that of jewellers. The Železný Brod (ZBS) glassworks was created in 1948 as a result of nationalisation, at the time, this was made up of 9 glass factories in the town. ZBS being particularly well known for its free-form organic vases and bowls designed by Miroslav Klinger.

This elegantly whimsical duo of hand-painted and sculpted ceramic art is by celebrated Danish illustrator and glass, silver, ceramics designer Bjorn Wiinblad (b. 1918 - d. 2006). Wiinblad often designed for a number of big names as well as the pottery studios he owned, such as Vaerksted, Nymolle, and Det Blaa Hus. These studio works were crafted at his own Vaerksted [Workshop] studio, which Wiinblad established in 1952 in Copenhagen. Vaerksted pieces by Wiinblad show his painting skills at their best – conveying an emotion or feeling with just a few brushstrokes or marks.
Those familiar with Wiinblads illustrative work will be familiar with the exquisite level of detail his imagination goes to. This richness of detail is brought to life across many elements of this sculpture; such as the individually shaped, stylised decor resting in the figure's hat and the careful attention in the intricate hand-painted patterns decorating the piece and attention given even when illustrating eyelashes.

A BIT OF HISTORY Born in 1918 in Copenhagen, Bjorn Wiinblad began his training and path to success in 1935. Wiinblad sought the path to his first passion of art and enrolled in graphic school at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, debuting in 1945 with an extensive exhibition in Palægade, Copenhagen. He met and became firm friends Jacob E. Bang around this time, who engaged him to work for Nymølle Pottery.
From the beginnings at Nymolle, Wiinblad received multiple commissions, from designing textile and embroidery patterns to drawing posters, book and magazine illustrations. Wiinblad drew for the United Nations in Paris and designed costumes and stages for several theatrical performances. His fame grew in Denmark but soon would extend to Norway and Sweden and in 1950 his ceramics were exhibited at Bonnier's in New York, which specialised in Scandinavian design.
Wiinblad's recognition and acclaim would continue to grow, bringing him a silver medal at the first international ceramics festival in 1955 in Cannes, France and appointment as artistic director for Rosenthal in 1960. During the 1960s, Wiinblad would become owner to a number of ceramic studios including Vaerksted, Nymolle and Det Blaa Hus. He would make Det Blaa Hus his workshop and home until his death in 2006.

This elegant work of Swedish Mid Century Modern design is by Hjördis Oldfors (b. 1920 - d. 2014) for Upsala Ekeby. Oldfors was a celebrated Swedish ceramicist, painting, and textile artist, known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics.
This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Oldfors popular Kokos series, for which there are ten works of earthenware dishes, bowls and vases designed in 1954 and in production until 1958. The series is characterised by the clean-lined, swelling forms and the deliciously tactile decor. The decor is an arrangement of sgraffito bands of glossy Dandelion yellow glaze alternating with the unglazed Dark Chocolate earthenware. The combination of the silky smooth glaze bands and the unglazed elements present a striking and tactile contrast.
The form of this piece and of the series is undeniably Modernist in design, highlighting the seamless harmony of function, form, and the raw materials

A BIT OF HISTORY Hjördis Hanna Maria Oldfors (b. 1920 - d. 2014) was a celebrated Swedish ceramicist, painting, and textile artist. Oldfors is known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics; including Poäng (Points), Kokos (Coconut), Trio (Trio), Palma (Palma), and Granit (Granite). Oldfors is represented at a number of museums including; National Museum (Sweden), Röhsska Museum, and at the Nordenfjeldske Konstindustrimuseum.
Though Oldfors was a late arrival to her ceramics career, beginning her studies in 1947 in Gothenburg, she became incredibly successful. Her career at Upsala Ekeby began in 1950 when she was 30 and she would go on to set up her own studio 'Bränd Form' with a number of exhibitions representing Upsala Ekeby and her own studio. The curators of the day are notably known to have said "She has an astonishing certainty in the abstract decor and its adaptation to the form. In this area, she does not have many competitors in our ceramics."

This elegant work of Art Deco design is by ceramics designer Charlotte Rhead (b. 1885 - d. 1947) for the English pottery Crown Ducal.
The form is mildly ridged and graduates outwards, creating a well balanced bowl. The softly geometric and pointed bronzed ridges, complemented by the tactile dots and band around the base makes the form cleanly sophisticated and classically Art Deco.
This excellent work of Rhead's iconic design makes for an stylish, edgy vessel to hold displays such as a planter for a succulents arrangement.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. There is however, natural and mild staining on the interior as well as light wear to the bronze elements that is commensurate with age. The underside of the dish is stamped with Crown Ducal's mark.

A BIT OF HISTORY Charlotte Rhead (b. 1885 - d. 1947) was an English ceramics designer active in the 1920s and the 1930s in the Potteries area of Staffordshire. Rhead came from an artistic family and from the beginning of the 20th century, Charlotte began working for Wardle & Co. a pottery in the nearby town of Hanley. Though she did not stay long, it gave her the opportunity to learn the skill of tube-lining, which became a technique that would become characteristic to her career as a designer.
She secured her first engagement as a designer in the early 1900s at T&R Boote before joining her father at Wood & Sons. Rhead is well known for her association with Burgess & Leigh, where she was a designer from 1926 to 1931 and also her work at Crown Ducal from 1931 onwards.

This joyful work of iconically Swedish Mid Century design is by Mari Simmulson (b. 1911- d. 2000) for Upsala Ekeby. Simmulson was a celebrated Swedish ceramics designer and ceramicist, known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics. This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Simmulson's well-known Salix series, these earthenware works were designed in 1953.
The series is characterised by the delightfully simple form, like that of an abstract 60s pinafore dress, the glossy glaze is a palette of Chocolate brown, with 'dot' discs of Pineapple yellow on Milk white. The form of this piece and palette is undeniably exuberant, striking and vivacious, combined with the size - makes this a particularly rare find.
CONDITION Excellent - there are no chips or repairs. There is a single hairline crack on the interior of the rim that does not appear on the exterior of the vase. There is age commensurate wear in the form on crazing on the interior of the vase. The underside of the base is inscribed with Upsala Ekebys 'UE Sweden' and Simmulson's 'ms' monogram as well as the model number '4130'.

A BIT OF HISTORY Mari Peterson Särgava, ceramicist and textile artist (b. 1911- d. 2000) began her career with an internship with Arabia in Finland and it was during this time she married Gustaf Simmulson.
Simmulson moved to Sweden in 1944 and began working with Wilhelm Kåge at Gustavsbergs, staying until 1949. Her career took her to Uppsala Ekeby in 1949, where she designed vases, figures, reliefs and wall paintings, many of them noted as unique pieces. She became a leading designer at Uppsala Ekeby where she remained until the early 1970s. Simmulson also received commissions for public pieces including at Luleå Kol, Upplandsbanken and Pharmacia.

This exquisitely intricate Totai Shippo piece is dated to c.1880 from the Japanese Meiji era (1868-1912 ).
Totai Shippo is the technique of applying Cloisonné enamel to ceramic believed to have been discovered by Sukamoto Kaisuke (b.1828 - d.1887) some time around 1868. Traditional Cloisonné of using thin wire or metal to contain different coloured enamels applied to a metal vessel itself is already a revered technique. Totai Shippo elevates the technique to another level when you consider the detailed wired sections of this piece is as small as 1-2mm in width.
This particular piece bears two 'faces', a panel on each side that displays the detailed design of butterflies, Chrysanthemums and Anemones in tones of Dusted Powder and Cobalt Blue, Oxblood Red and Apple Green. Encircling the panels are features of Sakura buds and blossom interwoven with the Teal patterned background.
This excellent work of art makes for a superbly decorative and highly collectable art feature.

A BIT OF HISTORY Japanese Cloisonne enamelware is a technique introduced to Japan around the Tokugawa period during the 16th century.
Cloisonne or 'Cloisonné' are metalwork objects with decoration that is applied by creating separating sections using wire or thin metal. The sections are filled with different coloured enamels to create a visual image or pattern and the whole piece be fired multiple times to realise the colours.

This stylised work of British art pottery piece is of English late-Art Deco design from the 1930s, with a colour palette similar to that of Monet's 'Wisteria' Impressionist painting.
Beautifully sculptural and seemingly simple, this piece is a manifestation of the significant technique needed to result in its evenly hand-formed body. The Art Deco accents appear most prominently in the softly geometric, diamond form. The hand-painted, silky, semi-matte glaze décor on the interior is a beautifully dappled blending of Azure blue tones with Golden Sand, Teal Green and Chocolate Brown. The exterior décor is a reflection of the interior with the same tones that is edged at the base with the Chocolate Brown.
This piece has a gracefully elegant presence, an embodiment of English Art Deco design from c. 85 years ago. The combination of its form, colour palette and condition makes it a particularly rare find.

Wadeheath Ceramics 1867 - present Wadeheath Ceramics was originally founded in 1867, in Burslem, England, a collective of different pottery companies that specialised in earthenware and porcelain.
The original companies were:
Wade & Myatt (later became George Wade & Son, which made industrial ceramics and Wade Whimsies). Established 1867.
John Wade & Co (later Wade Heath & Co, which made decorative ware, particularly Art Deco vases in the 1930s). Established 1867.
J & W Wade (later AJ Wade Ltd, which made tiles, notably the original tiles for the London Underground). Established 1891.
Wade made its way into history with beautiful ceramic art ware known as Flaxman Ware in the Art Deco style by Wade Heath & Co and its figure collection known as Wade Whimsies that became hugely popular in the UK and America in the 1950s.
This elegant work of Swedish Mid Century Modern design is by Hjördis Oldfors (b. 1920 - d. 2014) for Upsala Ekeby. Oldfors was a celebrated Swedish ceramicist, painting, and textile artist, known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics.
This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Oldfors popular Kokos series, for which there are ten works of earthenware bowls and vases designed in 1954. The series is characterised by the clean-lined, swelling forms and the deliciously tactile decor. The decor is an arrangement of sgraffito bands of glossy Dandelion yellow glaze alternating with the unglazed Dark Chocolate earthenware. The combination of the silky smooth glaze bands and the unglazed elements present a striking and tactile contrast.

A BIT OF HISTORY Hjördis Hanna Maria Oldfors (b. 1920 - d. 2014) was a celebrated Swedish ceramicist, painting, and textile artist. Oldfors is known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics; including Poäng (Points), Kokos (Coconut), Trio (Trio), Palma (Palma), and Granit (Granite). Oldfors is represented at a number of museums including; National Museum (Sweden), Röhsska Museum, and at the Nordenfjeldske Konstindustrimuseum.
Though Oldfors was a late arrival to her ceramics career, beginning her studies in 1947 in Gothenburg, she became incredibly successful. Her career at Upsala Ekeby began in 1950 when she was 30 and she would go on to set up her own studio 'Bränd Form' with a number of exhibitions representing Upsala Ekeby and her own studio. The curators of the day are notably known to have said "She has an astonishing certainty in the abstract decor and its adaptation to the form. In this area, she does not have many competitors in our ceramics."

This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Simmulson's well-known Ringo series, there are eighteen works of earthenware bowls and vases that were designed in 1965. The series is characterised by the delightfully textured Chocolate Cookies unglazed earthenware body that is overlaid with the Dark Chocolate striped bands of semi matte glaze. The silky Dark Chocolate glaze is also beautifully featured on the neck, shoulders and underside of the vase, juxtaposing the earthenware. This particular piece is finished with a circle of semi-matte Pale Lemon dots, an iconic accent to the series. The form of this piece and of the series is undeniably Modernist in design, highlighting the seamless harmony of function, form and the raw materials.

This elegantly ethereal duo of handblown Swedish art glass miniatures is by Bertil Vallien, (b. 1938 - ), internationally celebrated Swedish glass artist, sculptor, ceramist, and designer for Kosta Boda, one of Sweden's leading glassworks.
Those familiar with the process of hand-blowing or hot working glass will know that glass needs to reach 1,320 °C (2,400 °F) to melt and even the working temperature is 1,090 °C (2,000 °F). This knowledge helps to appreciate the care, effort, and skill required to create these miniature works of art glass.
The blue pipe vase bearing the signature winding stripes is from Vallien's Rainbow series, designed in the 1980s. However, it is created in the uncommon and translucent Pale Powdered blue with traces of a golden-sand toned frit glass interwoven into the body.
The lidded pot is even more unusual and has not been attributable to a series, though it is a Vallien signed piece with its original label intact. The body and lid are also in an airy, Pale Powdered blue tone, very similar to the tone used in Vallien's Starlight series. The piece is finished with a clear curl finial on the lid.
Both pieces carry labels that display the parent company of Kosta Boda AB, this name came into use in 1976 before changing to Orrefors Kosta Boda AB in 1989.

A BIT OF HISTORY Born 1938, Bertil Vallien was only 15 when he left home, drawn by the allure of the big city. After a series of occasional jobs, as a window-dresser at one of the main department stores in Stockholm, and as an apprentice in his father's decorating firm, Vallien would eventually decide to become an artist which would lead him into the world of ceramics. The guidance he received in his early career included that of Stig Lindberg - one of Sweden's foremost designers of ceramic art and one of the leading designers for Rörstrand in the 1970's.
Today, Vallien is one of the most well-known representatives of 20th century Swedish ceramic and art glass design and is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design as well as abroad in the Everson Museum of Art of New York. Vallien's works have only become more collectable over the years with sculptures from his Head and Journey (Boat) series fetching up to $20,000 USD.

This elegant trio of handblown Swedish art glass miniatures is by three of Kosta Boda's famously celebrated glass artists: Bertil Vallien, Ulrica Hyd-Vallien and Monika (Monica) Backstrom.
In this trio: - The charming white frit glass and hand-painted bowl is by Ulrica Hyd-Vallien from her 1979 series 'Butterfly'. - The white frit glass, abstract flask-form vase, with delicate and tactile netted surface pattern is by Bertil Vallien from his 1978 series 'Network'. - The elegant abstract bottle vase in tactile grey scavo and smooth, clear crystal casing is by Monika Backstrom attributed to her 1989 series Sunny. This piece is trimmed in Cerulean blue as opposed to the usual Scarlet red.
Both the Butterfly bowl and Network vase is from The Artist Collection, a concept was introduced by Vallien to give glass artists the freedom for personal, creative expression and to remove the 'mass produced' feeling. The final piece is from Kosta Boda Atelier collections. Whether pieces were created as part of The Artist Collection or Atelier, they are limited edition studio works and individual to the artist that created them. As each piece is handblown, this also makes the final décor of each piece unique.

A BIT OF HISTORY Kosta Boda, Sweden’s oldest glass company, was founded as 'Kosta' in 1742 and began making art glass — that is, unique and limited edition pieces — with the hiring of the painter Gunnar Wennerberg in 1898. Kosta has a strong history for many well-known glass artists such as Ewald Dahlskog, Vicke Lindstrand, Erik Höglund, Bertil Vallien and many many more.

Reflecting the Modernist design influences of its time, these pieces are a simple celebration of organic form and function with light-giving paler colours.
The abstract bottle forms each bear a mildly flaring rim, are even and well balanced. The glossy foam glaze is a rich graduating blend that starts with a Warm pink at the rim that progresses to a deeper Coral orange before ending with a Powdered Pine green at the base. The application of the glaze is in a dappled, foam manner.

A BIT OF HISTORY SylvaC (with a deliberate capital C at the end) was founded in 1894 by William Copestake and William Shaw, originally named Shaw & Copestake. It would be 1937 till a merging of companies formed under the name of Sylvac. Central to its history were figurines of animals, and rabbits in particular, and the company was known for its relatively inexpensive and widely available tableware and decorative works. SylvaC continued its production until the early 1980s.

This exquisite work of 70s Modernist studio art ceramic is by master ceramist Reiner Gehrig (b. 1938 - ) Grünstadt Studio. Gehrig owned Grünstadt, enjoying a long and successful career before retiring in 2013.
This brilliantly executed work is a shining example of Gehrig's signature style, a fusion of a sculpted, lightly geometric, polished form combined with a touch-inviting, sumptuous running glaze.
The deceptively simple bottle form is crafted with inflection points which create the three softly geometric segments and is finished with an elegantly tapered neck. The base glaze to this piece is a rich hares fur glaze of matte brown tones from deep Umber to tones of warm Cedar, Cinnamon and Coffee. Overlaid onto the base glaze is resplendent running blue glaze in tones of Azure, Cobalt, Aegean and Indigo which intersperses with earthy hues of Cedar and Blonde.
CONDITION Excellent- no chips, cracks or repairs. There is mild wear on the underside of the base that is commensurate with the age of the piece. A BIT OF HISTORY Gehrig began apprenticing with ceramics in 1954, at the age of 16. He would work his way through apprenticeship to journeyman until he attended and graduated in 1961 from the master class with Hubert Griemert (b. 1905 - d. 1990) in Höhr-Grenzhause. Griemert was an important figure in the German studio pottery world, a professor, master potter who often designed for KPM Berlin.
After graduating, Gehrig spent some years working for recognised names such as JLKnödgen, Van Daalen, Ulmer Keramik, Steingutfabrik Grünstadt before establishing his own studio in 1974.
Gehrig is known for having quickly and confidently developed his own style, becoming particularly proficient with turning difficult forms. He was known to work in ceramic, porcelain, stoneware and developing a rich range of glazes, from running to salt glaze.
In his long career, Gehrig was awarded the Palatinate Prize for arts and crafts and his work features in collections at the Deidesheim, Museum of Modern Ceramics, Höhr-Grenzhausen, and the Ceramic Museum Westerwald Mainz, Ministry of Culture.

THE ITEM This stunning work is of Modernist art glass is a celebration of the highly skilled Murano Sommerso technique. Sommerso is one of the most famous Murano techniques, ['Sommerso' translation: 'submerged']. Sommerso is used to create several layers of glass (usually with different contrasting colours) inside a single object, giving the illusion of immersed' colours without mixing. This technique is easily recognisable; characterised by an outer 'casing' of clear glass and the thick 'bands' of coloured glass inside it.
This particular piece has the sought after triple-layer Sommerso, beginning with a core of Apple green, the next layer is vibrant Ocean blue and the final layer is a graduating Magenta pink. The work is finished with the wings of Azure blue which flourish with a flare at the rim.
The cased layers are arranged in an abstract pitcher shape with a gently exaggerated rim. The effect of each colour is similar to freezing the moment in time when a paintbrush is dipped into water and the colour ripples outwards.
This exceptional piece is unique as it features Kintsugi golden seams following a careful repair and highlighting process and even rarer as Kintsugi is typically applied to repairing ceramics rather than glass. The Kintsugi technique used is modern and has been applied in a tactile manner, a striking compliment to the colour palette of this piece.
CONDITION Excellent. This piece has been carefully repaired using a robust water-resistant and durable resin. There is natural and very mild surface wear that is commensurate with the age of the piece.

Kintsugi is a Japanese philosophy with similarities to the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which includes ideas surrounding the embracing of the flawed or imperfect. The art of Kintsugi ("golden joinery") is typically the repairing of broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The aesthetics of this philosophy values breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

THE ITEM This richly detailed yet simply silhouetted studio ceramic sculpture is a work of contemporary French design.
Featured is a strong composition and fusion of techniques upon the clay as well as within the glaze. From the Sgrafitto-like etched accents, print impression to the clay to the layers of glaze which have been brush-painted and dripped. The colour palette is a harmonious blend of earth tones. The colours range across a spectrum of browns with some emphasised in a metallic tint and extends into the glossy Red Earth hues.
The sculpture features a combination of design influences from the Modernist celebration of functional form to the Brutalist ' celebration of raw materials. Crafted with a centralised reservoir, this piece is well suited to function as an Ikebana and indeed, both the form and colours hint at Japanese Raku pottery.
CONDITION Excellent. There is mild use wear in the form of movement marks on the underside of the base that is commensurate with the age of the piece. Mentioned for completeness: There is a hairline fracture on the underside of the base, however, this is from the crafting process and not damage or defect, it is also not visible when the piece is upright and on display. This chicly fun, Modernist Op Art work that is brimming with Summery vibes is of mid-century German design.
Crafted from white clay, the form of this piece is that of a stylised Moon Flask. The two 'faces' of the vase bears a finishing of lightly ingrained concentric circles, which give a tactile, rippling effect. The subtle but elegant form makes this an excellent piece for the art of Ikebana [tr. 'making flowers alive'.] and a superb canvas for the beautiful glaze. The base gloss glaze is a cool Sky blue that has been overlaid with a free-flowing Daisy white upon which is an infusion of coloured sprinklings in tones Blueberry, Strawberry, Lemon and Lime.

This exceptional work of French Art Nouveau cameo glass is by one of the most prominent glassworks Daum, based in the city of Nancy (1878 - present). The Daum studio creates their art in crystal and remains as one of the only studios who use the pâte de verre process for art glass and crystal sculptures.
Designed and crafted in the 1900s, the form and glowing ethereal palette of this piece is a rare combination that has made it a feature in the dedicated book "Daum - Maitres Verriers" by Edita Denoel, (Edita S.A. Lausanne, 1980, p. 61). The base colour palette is composed of cool and faintly opalescent pale blue tones, which has been overlaid with the tactile golden-hued Zucchini leaves, stems, flower buds and tendrils in high relief.

A BIT OF HISTORY Founded in 1878 by Jean Daum, the studio rose to prominence during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period (1890 - 1910, 1908 - 1935), capturing the attention and imagination of collectors all over the world. Daum would exhibit at Paris International Exhibition in 1889, a pivotal event which marked the birth of the French Art Nouveau movement. With leading artists such as Henri Berge, Almaric Walter, Charles Schneider and Jacques Gruber, the studio would go on to win their first ‘Grand Prix’ in 1900.
The studio continued its ascent to international fame around this time, which further elevated when they began to create their art with pâte-de-verre, a glass-making technique first used over five thousand years ago in the early world. Fueled by international success, the studio would broaden their range to glass art objects and enter into a period of phenomenal development. The studio revolutionised techniques by experimenting with materials such as acids, colour powders, fluorine hydrogen and enamel. Collaboration with leading designers was also a common aspect of Daum's exploration and creativity, working with names such as Louis Majorelle, Eugene Galles, Emile Wirts and Salvador Dali.
Today, Daum is well known for creating pieces in high quality, crystal glass.

THE ITEM This charming mid-century piece with its romantically moody Steel blue is crafted from Lucite (also known as Plexiglas). Lucite became widely available in the late 1930s as a lightweight alternative to glass and this particular piece is cool to touch as glass is as well as ringing with glass-like tones when gently tapped.
The footed form of this piece is well-balanced and functionally versatile, and also lends itself to excellent refractions. Crafted in a cool-toned Steel blue, it is further decorated with an overlay of handpainted sweeping and swirling bands in Lemon yellow and Tangerine Orange.
This retro Modernist piece will make an excellent accent piece to a room with similarly themed Mid Century, Modernist or Retro decor.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips or cracks or repairs. There is mild wear that is predominantly in the form of wear to the underside of the vase and negligible wear to the exterior body. THE ITEM This intricately painted work is Cantonese Enamelware, a technique of hand-painting and firing enamel introduced to China around the18th century. Cantonese Enamelware is different from Cloisonne or 'Cloisonné' technique, which is metalwork decorated with enamel applied to sections separated by wire or thin metal.
This particular set comprises of a matchbox cover, two ashtrays and a storage tin made of copper. The set is rare as all pieces are decorated in the same design and colour palette. What is rarer is that although the pieces are in delicate condition, the wear on the decor is relatively light.
The design theme present on all pieces is the striking Lapis blue background which is overlaid with stylised peaches and peach blossom. The design is typical of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau period when design often included influences from the East. Each piece is further decorated with their own ancient familial scenes. The interior and undersides of the tin and ashtrays are decorated with a pale Turquoise blue.
CONDITION Good. Apparent wear is present to the enamel of each piece that is commensurable with the age. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report.

THE ITEM This vivaciously spirited and tactile composition is by German artist Bea Schröder from Atelier MicMac, Düsseldorf, Germany.
This particular piece is an earlier work that incorporates a broad spectrum of techniques as well as multiple media types, brought together to create an expression of Schröder's pictographic and symbol-based 'MicMac' art form.
Schröder's MicMac repertoire includes translations of hieroglyphs, petroglyphs from the ancient times, modern iconographic signs of our time, as well as symbols from the Mi'kmaq Indians, one of the First Nations who still live in Canada.
From an interview with the artist; "You don't need an ethnologist to decipher it. You just have to listen to your inner voice." “You recognize the signs, even if you don't know them. The brain begins to work with them and develop their own interpretations.”

A BIT OF HISTORY Schröder has been a freelance artist since 1992 and enjoyed such success that she went on to establish her own art studio Atelier MicMac in Dusseldorf, Germany.
In Schröder's own words, her art form is MicMac, inspired by her first encounter with the emotional power of symbols used by the Mi'kmaq Indians, one of the First Nations who still live in Canada.
She has incorporated many of the Mi'kmaq symbols into her art as well as being inspired by the bright colours and simple symbols from the Neolithic caves, which were originally used by people to communicate within their communities. Schroder says “Today's caves are homes and workplaces" and translates hieroglyphs and petroglyphs from ancient times into contemporary symbolic languages. She sees her art of communication and motivation as "cave painting for the 21st century".
Antique 1900s Kralik Draped Decor, Iridescent Cranberry and Silver Collared Bohemian Art Glass Vase

This exceptional and rare work of Art Nouveau, Art Deco art glass is by Bohemian glassworks Kralik. The decor of this piece is the well documented 'Draped', which as the name suggests, has the effect of draped fabric. The textured, 'draped' surface effect is combined with the gold-toned iridescence of the art glass gives the effect of draped Cranberry pink satin.
The piece is finished with a silver collar accent (hallmarked to Birmingham Assay Office 1903-1904), which complements its elegant bottle form and was common to art glass design during the Art Nouveau period.
BIT OF HISTORY The Kralik glassworks, full name Wilhelm Kralik Sohne, was originally founded by Josef Meyr in 1815, in Bohemia. The factory was originally called Adolfshutte. When Josef died, his son Jan took over the company. By this time, the company owned four glass factories. Jan died in 1841, and his two nephews Josef Taschek and Wilhelm Kralik became the owners. The company name was changed to J. Meyr's Neffen, and when Josef died in 1862, the name changed to J. Meyr's Neffe.
Wilhelm Kralik died in 1877, and left the company to his 4 sons. The company was split in two - Heinrich and Johann took the name Wilhelm Kralik Sohne, Hugo and Karl used the name Meyr's Neffe. Meyr's Neffe merged with Moser in 1922. Wilhelm Kralik Sohne continued to produce glassware until World War II.
CONDITION Superb. There are no chips, cracks or repair to the glass, there is the mild sanding at the rim that is visible as a result of the wear to the silver collar and is from the production process. There is a single bubbling measuring c. 0.2 mm which is from the production process and has been mentioned for completeness. There is significant and visible wear to the silver collar which can be left untouched for its antique charm or replaced if preferred. Please see photos as they form part of the condition report. The silver collar is hallmarked to the Birmingham Assay Office, 1903-1904, the silversmith mark is unclear but has been attributed as 'AHD', Alfred Horatio Darby who was active from 1895 to 1933.
