Presenting a beautifully worked pair of iridised brass Art Nouveau candlesticks.
These pieces have survived in a rare and remarkable condition - it is much more common to encounter the brass in a dull and clouded state. The brass of this pair however, have survived in a condition where they are still showing off their iridised sheen.
The design and form are in the stylised and gently angular symbolistic Art Nouveau style, very similar to the design style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
This pair would have originally been fitted to a piano, hence the name Piano Candlesticks. And as can be seen in Renoirs 'Young Girls at the Piano' painting as well as many of his other Piano scene paintings, they would have been used to illuminate the sheets of music. However, today, you're much more likely to see them as wall fitted.
The arm of each candleholder has a drip plate beneath the sconce to catch melted wax and has a hinged 'Swing Arm' fitting onto the wall bracket, the hinged fitting allows the arm to be 'swung' as required.
These works would be an eye catching addition to a room inspired by Art Nouveau, Art Deco or even Steampunk design.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Art Nouveau is an international style of art, architecture and applied art, especially the decorative arts, that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. It was inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants, flowers and insects. Curves, asymmetrical forms, and intense colours were other common motifs of the movement.
Art Nouveau is a total art style and embraces a wide range of fine and decorative arts, including architecture, painting, graphic art, interior design, jewelry, furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass art, and metal work. Artists and designers famous for their Art Nouveau designs are numerous; including the likes Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Louis Tiffany, Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha.

This exceptional work of Murano mid-century Modern design is by the Mazzega glassworks. This simple silhouette of this piece is beautifully elegant yet deceptively clean as there is a remarkable amount of detail within the decor of this piece.
The body of composed from clear Pulegoso glass which has the effect of closely striated bubbles and is created from a technique that includes chemicals into the glass melting process. Within the clear glass, there are also undulating bands of teal blue glass that are edged with amber.

Presenting a fantastic piece of Dutch Mid Century Modern design ceramic in the form of a UFO pendant lamp, created during the Eames, Panton era. This particular design is rare enough to encounter, let alone in such excellent condition as well as size (c. 12" / 30 cm in diameter and with a height of c. 8.3" / 21 cm).
The volcanic lava is wonderfully tactile; thickly applied white semi-gloss glaze is interspersed with a dark chocolate brown. The lava sits as two bands, one at the base of the lamp and one at the 'shoulders' of the lamp, at the base of the milky-cocoa gloss glaze.
The semi-matte deep pumpkin orange glaze section has a balanced number of holes to let the light through and even without the light on, its a beautiful piece of work of ceramic art in itself.
A big plus is that the lamp is fitted with a Rolly, the Rolly Brevettato wiring support was designed for electrical chandeliers created by Italian company Elettrolampart Componenti. This particular Rolly can support weights of up to 4kg and allows the lamp to extend up to a length of c. 125 cm / 49" - should the room or space have a particularly high ceiling.
This excellent piece would grace any space with Mid Century, Modernist or Contemporary design inspired decor.
CONDITION
Excellent, with no chips, cracks or scratches to the body of the ceramic. There is light wear to black metal cap at the top of the lamp and light rust in the Rolly key, both signs of wear which is commensurable with age of the piece, please see photos as part of the condition report.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Unfortunately it's not been possible to trace more detailed provenance on this piece, with the exception that this piece was made in the Herda, the Netherlands.
THE ITEM
Sleek, elegant and sophisticated, this fantastically modernist piece was crafted circa 1960 (late 1950s - early 1960s), carrying the height of mid century modern design influences. The shade is made with brass, smoothed to form a belt with circular gaps of varying sizes and hot molten glass was handblown through the belt to create the 'caged bubbles' effect.
As a result of the high temperature of the melted glass during the crafting process, the brass developed a unique and wonderful patina and therefore each light is a one-of-a-kind piece in its own right. The electrical fittings for this light has been adapted with a plug, however this can easily be removed and the light can be fitted as suspended ceiling lamp.
As you can see from the photographs, this light is beautiful whether it is lit up or not. Would suit a Mid Century Modern, Vintage, Contemporary or even Industrial decor themed room.
