THE ITEM
This beautifully tranquil piece of art was made by legendary Swedish glass designer Vicke Lindestrand, from his Seaweed series, capturing the moment of motion - of seaweed gently lulling amongst the bubbles under clear water and personally, I think the day was sunny. Like a photo but instead of being flat and two dimensional, it's organically vibrant within the glass.
The captured vibrant green and deliberate bubbles are a wonderful example of the Mykene technique that Lindstrand developed in the 1930s. These vases were hand blown, demonstrating Lindestrands skill and master craftmanship.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Vicke Lindstrand (1904 - 1983) was an uncompromising Swedish illustrator, ceramicist, painter, sculptor, glass and textile designer who came to prominence during the 1930s and 50s through his work at the famous glass manufacturers Orrefors and, later, Kosta Boda.
Lindstrand was considered a pioneer of Swedish glass art. Joining Orrefors in 1928, he pioneered more daring art glass designs, inventing the Ariel technique. He joined Kosta Glasbruk in 1950 as an artistic director where he was the dominant designer, lending his name to many now classic designs.
