This striking work of mid-century Modern design is by Roger Capron (b.1922 - d.2006) for his ceramic studio factory in Vallauris, France. Alongside names such as Picasso, Robert Picault and Jean Derval, Capron was a key contributing figure in the renaissance of ceramics in Vallauris.
The bold use of the hand-painted, strong Charcoal black lines to separate and organically shape the high-colour, gloss-glazed sections is characteristic of Capron's design style. The setting of the colour palette against the backdrop of the luxuriantly sumptuous, silky matt-white base glaze is yet another Capron design trait that is applied to the rounded square bottle form. The vivid colour palette for this particular piece consists of Charcoal black, Goldenrod Yellow, Navy Ink blue and Persimmon orange which is a beautiful juxtaposition to the otherwise simple form.
This piece is both subtle and distinct at the same time, with a timelessness to its design that is suitable for standalone display or functionally as a simple Ikebana vase.
CONDITION Very Good. There is mild surface wear to the glaze and movement marks on the underside of the base that is commensurable with age. Mentioned for completeness: There is one chip present on the underside of the base that measures c. 1cm x 0.4cm that does not detract from display. A BIT OF HISTORY Roger Capron (b. 1922 - d. 2006) Capron was born in Vincennes, France in 1922 and became a student at the School of Applied Arts (École des Arts Appliqués à l'Industrie) in Paris at the age of 16, and by 1945, a professor at the same school. In 1946 and at the age of 24, Capron moved to Vallauris, setting up the 'l`Atelier Callis' workshop in collaboration with Robert Picault and Jean Derval. By 1952, he was ready to establish his own ceramic studio factory in Vallauris and within 5 years he'd developed a significant international reputation.
Capron work was known for its Modernistic emblematic forms with characteristics of his work represented in stylized branches, characters, geometrical suns that would functional works of art that made typically made a colourful and creative statement in the spaces they were displayed.
The studio factory sadly closed in 1982 due to the economic crisis but did not prevent the founding of Atelier Capron in 1983. In his lifetime, Capron won numerous design awards, enshrining him as a key contributing figure in ceramic design before his death in 2006.

This striking and vivid work of handblown, hot worked of mid-century art glass is by Murano, Vetro Artistico Veneziano. This piece brings with it a beautiful demonstration of the Avventurina technique. Avventurina [tr. Aventurine] is one of many popular and widely recognised Murano technique and as its name suggests, is glass decorated with aventitius surface effects resembling the shimmering flecks of natural quartz. The decoration revives a 17th century technique pioneered in the Murano (Venice) glasshouse of the Miotto family.
This particular piece brings together a bold Candy Apple red with an exterior of silver floating shimmers that is cased in clear glass and worked into the organic, tricorn form. The clear casing is finished with 3 pulled rims, each supporting one of the three folded tips.
Highly tactile, the form invites touch and the timeless style is suitable for standalone display or functional use.
CONDITION Excellent. There is very light use wear, most prominently on the underside of the base that is commensurable with the age of the piece. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. The piece is additionally marked with most of the Vetro Artistico Veneziano label on the underside of the base.

This sculptural work brings with it a seamless blending of Atomic era and Modernist design and is by British Pottery Beswick, a firmly celebrated name in British ceramics design. The sleek form is reminiscent of the Chemosphere house that was so iconic to Space Age Atomic design.
Complimenting the futuristic design is the silky semi-matte satin glaze décor applied in earthy graduating brown tones of Powdered Terracotta, Mocha Cream and Raw Umber for the central supporting pillar. This refined piece is stylistically timeless and yet also prominently of its era, the combination of the form with the colour palette makes it a rare find. This would suit a Minimalist inspired room as a standalone display piece or for functional use, such as a succulent planter.

A BIT OF HISTORY Beswick Pottery 1892 - 2002 The Beswick firm was founded as 'J W Beswick' in 1892 by James Beswick and his sons in Staffordshire and originally produced tableware and ornaments. The pottery was chiefly known for producing high-quality porcelain figurines such as animals and Beatrix Potter characters that have become highly sought after in the collectables market.
Following James Beswick's death in 1921, his grandson John took over and continued to expand the business. In 1934, introduced a new range of jugs, bowls and vases decorated with new matte glazes. Responding to the Modernist design influence of the time, many of these highly distinctive shapes were designed by Mr Symcox. These works were often decorated in 'satin-matte' glazes using soft pastel colours running into each other or arranged in striking modern geometric blocks and lines. Beswick would go on to become known for their ceramic animal figures before being taken over by Royal Doulton in 1969 and finally closing in the early 2000s.
This deliciously tactile work of mid-century design by British company Beswick Pottery. The seemingly simple form is of stylised ripples like that of its art glass counterpart, the Fazzoletto handkerchief form.
The glaze décor is a satin, semi-matt gloss with a pale Butterscotch cream that is overlaid with variegated deep Chocolate brown that graduates into a base of deep Mint Grin. The combination of the form, colour palette, and condition makes this piece a rare find. This work would suit a vintage-inspired room as a standalone display piece or functionally as a succulent planter.

This majestic and highly skilled work of Swedish design is a sculpted Op Art art glass vase that has been created in the style of Hanne Dreutler (b. 1942 - d. 2009), glass artist and silversmith for Kosta Boda glassworks. Dreutler's career included an important contribution to the art glass field in the excelling at a technique called Graal glass. There are a number of glass artists from Kosta Boda who have been fond of the Double-Threading technique that is featured on this vase, such as Bertil Vallien, Ulrica Hyd-Vallien and Kjell Engman. This particular piece bears vivid threads of Vermilion red edged in with varying tones of Cornflower blue that are woven and looped together into the cross-hatch pattern and blown into the final teardrop form. The visual overlapping of the lines creates the Op Art illusion and crosshatch effect. This net-like effect is suspended in a curved and clear glass form.
This refined piece is stylistically timeless and yet also prominently of the Swedish Modernist art glass design. The combination of the form, striking size with the colour palette and its condition makes it a rare find.

A BIT OF HISTORY Hanne Dreutler (b. 1942 - d. 2009) / Studio Ahus Hanne ( Hannelore ) Margarete Dreutler was a recognised German-Swedish glass artist and silversmith. Dreutler trained as an industrial designer and silversmith began her career as an independent silversmith in Stockholm. She would go on to work for the Målerås and Flygsfors glassworks from 1968.
Dreutler moved to Kosta glassworks in 1971 where she would meet Arthur Zirnsack, and both would worked under Vicke Lindstrand. Dreutler and Zirnsack married and the couple started their own glassworks, Studio Åhus in 1977, one year after Kosta became Kosta Boda. Studio Åhus specialised in the famous traditions of Scandinavian glass art and Lindstrand worked at Ahus after he retired from Kosta Boda.
Dreutler's career included an important contribution to the art glass field and that was in the excelling at a technique called Graal glass. Graal glass is the cutting and engraving to reveal different colours of a blown glass bubble that consists of one or more layers of coloured glass overlaid on clear glass. The bubble is reheated and re-blown to the final shape of the object. The invention of this difficult technique was considered the 'holy grail' of glassblowing - hence the name ('graal' is Swedish for grail).
Dreutler's achievements include representation at the Stockholm National Museum, the granting of Studio Ahus' appointment to the King of Sweden in 1993 and in 1999, the awarding of the Kristianstad Municipality's cultural prize.
This stunning, handblown work of Swedish Modernist design art glass is by Vicke Lindstrand (b. 1904 - d. 1983), who was considered as one of the most influential 20th-century glass artists and a pioneer of glass art. This particular piece comes from a series of 5 objects designed by Lindstrand between 1955-1956 for Kosta (Boda) glassworks. Similar to Wirkkala's Kantarelli (Chantarelle) series that was released around the same time, Lindstrand's series focuses on the gentle exaggeration and stylisation of organic curves and stripes. But whilst Wirkkala chose to create physically grooved stripes on his works, Lindstrand chose to embed feathering threads of Deep Espresso into the body of his series.
These beautiful threads are in fact individual and separate but the prismatic quality that is typically found in Swedish crystal magnifies the bands to create a rolling effect in the stem. This magnificent piece stays true to the roots of Modernist design through the beautiful simplicity of form that speaks to an honest expression of the natural material.

A BIT OF HISTORY Vicke Lindstrand (b. 1904 - d. 1983) is considered as one of the most influential 20th-century glass artists and a pioneer of glass art. Lindstrand's prolific career included many design highlights, including his ability to excel at a technique called Cased Glass (known to many glass collectors as 'Sommerso'), in which a vividly coloured or patterned section of glass is surrounded by and seems to float within a clear crystal body.
Lindstrand's career began in commercial illustration before finding employment at the glass manufactory Orrefors. He would join Kosta Boda in 1950, remaining there until 1973. Beyond his commercial work, he also produced several massive public sculptures around the world. Today, his works are in many museum collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Kosta Boda is Sweden’s oldest glass company, founded in 1742 and began making art glass — that is, unique and limited edition pieces — with the hiring of the painter Gunnar Wennerberg in 1898. Kosta Boda enjoys a reputation as the country’s most artistic and experimental glassworks, featuring artists and sculptors.
There are few Kosta Boda designers who stand foremost in the minds of collectors, one is Vicke Lindstrand, who excelled at a technique of 'Sommerso', or cased glass.

This work of beautifully understated elegance is of Scandinavian mid-century design and by Upsala Ekeby's renowned artistic director, Arthur Percy (b.1886 - d. 1976). In this piece, Percy combines the gentle curves of the classic bottle flask form with a touch-inviting décor. The décor is built on a base of semi-matte clear glaze that highlights the natural Pale Buttermilk cream clay, this is then overlaid with a tessellation of tactile smooth and glossy Daisy white dots of glaze. The piece is finished with a striking contrast of semi-matte Natural Indigo blue on the interior of the vase.
The overall design is a seamless blend of simple sophistication, elevated elegance and Swedish mid century Modernist design.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. There are negligible movement marks to the underside of the base that is commensurate with the age of the piece as well as trivial flaws from the production process (e.g. a small number of white dots have picked up spots of the indigo pigment). The underside also Upsala-Ekeby stamp with the numbers '5062' and 'PERCY' as well as the inscribed initials of 'YW'.

A BIT OF HISTORY Carl Arthur Carlsson-Percy (b.1886 - d. 1976), a leading Swedish ceramist, artist and artistic director, born in Vickleby in 1886. During his early career, Percy travelled to Stockholm and Paris to develop his skills and techniques as a decorative painter, attending schools such as the Académie Collarossi and Matisse Painting School.
He would go on to become artistic director in 1923 at Gefle Porslinsfabrik (which became part of Upsala Ekeby in 1936) and in 1942 he became artistic director at Karlskrona Porslinsfabrik. His early work is characterised by items with soft decorations of flowers and birds and Italian 14th and 16th century inspiration.
During the 1920s, his renowned work includes the series "Gefle", "Vinranka", "Floating Blue", "Iris", "Three Flowers", "Silversties" and "Christina". During the 1930's and 40's came "Suecia", "Exotica" and his perhaps most famous décor "Rubin".
Percys art is represented in a large number of Swedish and foreign museums, including National Museum and Modern Museum, Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde, Art Museum in Gothenburg, and museums in Malmö, Norrköping, Lindköping, Västerås, Borås, Jönköping, Kalmar, Karlstad, Gävle and Östersund, etc. Abroad, one can find his art at the Sévres Museum in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Pau, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Metropolian Museum in New York and the Lubeck Museum in Germany and others.
