This delicious handblown work of Post Modern art glass is by leading Swedish glass artist Kjell Engman (b. 1946 -), accoladed with the name 'Glass Wizard' for his unlimited imagination with art glass.
This piece is from the popular series named Bon Bon, designed by Engman in 1989. It's easy to see why this series was named Bon Bon, with the candy-coloured pieces ranging from pairing Lavender lilac with Lemon yellow to Marmalade orange with Sky blue.
The central part of this particular piece is spheroid shaped, beautifully curved, and toned in a Candied Sapphire blue. Fused into the spheroid is the pitcher stem in striped tones of Coquelicot and Coral orange, the mergng between the two colours is finished with light sand texture. This work is further accented with an organically shaped Lemon yellow handle and finished with a disc of clear glass for the base.
The overall composition of this work is of great harmony, demonstrated in the stunning blending of colour with form and size, makes this a statement piece.
CONDITION Excellent. No chips, cracks, or repair. A BIT OF HISTORY Kjell Engman (b. 1946 -), accoladed with the name 'Glass Wizard' for his unlimited imagination with art glass and known for being one of ten highly talented artists. Since joining Kosta Boda in 1978, Engman has designed a number of iconic series, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as the animal kingdom, the world of music and entertainment.
Engman's style is distinctive and immediately recognisable. Common characteristics to his work include being bold, bright and colourful, ranging from the playful to the delicate to the sensuous. It could almost be described as Dali-esque and does not conform to preconceptions of simple, minimalist Swedish design.

Georgia Jacob, Corolle Series Sculptural Modernist Handkerchief Lamp Base, 1980s-90s, French

This majestically sculptural lamp is of French design by Georgia Jacob's company (1988 - 2012). This particular piece comes from the Corolle series, one of many series where Jacob explored shape and form exclusively through the arrangement of drape.
The overall composition is characterised by exceptionally tactile and organic qualities, with a core arrangement of 16 folds that are encircled by an outer band of 19 ruffles made of the Saffron Mango toned resin. This piece is finished with an elegant resin marble base, further accentuating the subtle luxury of the design.
Standing at half a metre tall, this stunning statement piece brings sophisticated Minimalism to its surroundings.

A BIT OF HISTORY Georgia Jacob International (1988 - 2012) Georgia Jacob International was founded in 1988 in Wasselonne, a small commune in the north of France, c. 26 km from Strasbourg. Jacob only produced handkerchief and flaming torch design lamps made of resin (polyester), fibreglass or acrylic with several different bases made in marble, brass, metal, wood, or resin. Lamp series included the Corolle, Kali, Athena, Ella, Ophélie, Fruit d’Ange (angel fruit). Sadly not much more is known about the company and records trace the company as discontinuing in 2012 due to insufficient assets.

Iwatsu Hineri, Sculpted Apricot, Scarlet and Azure Striped Twist Vase, 1960s-70s, Japanese

This striking and vibrant work of mid-century handblown art glass is of Japanese art glass design and by the glassworks Iwatsu, who were also known to have produced art glass under the labels of Hineri and Art Glass.
Graceful and organic, the central twist to the vase creates ripples that are highly tactile and invite touch. The colours of Apricot, Scarlet red and Azure blue swirl gloriously from the centre of the vase and outwards in alternating bands. The red and blue tones are translucent, creating stunning refractions when placed in the path of bright light. The work is finished with a clear glass 'Sommerso' casing at the base.
Stylistically timeless and majestic in size, there is an air of vivacious vitality to this work that remains constant whatever the season.
CONDITION Very Good. There are no cracks, only mild wear on the surface of this piece and age-related fleabites at the base and underside of the vase that is commensurable with the age. Please refer to the photos as they form part of the condition report. The underside of the base has a concave pontil that is a known finishing touch of Iwatsu.

A BIT OF HISTORY Iwatsu Glassworks Unfortunately, little is known about Iwatsu despite being one of the largest glassmakers in Japan, the commonly cited and understood reason is due to language barriers. However, Iwatsu is deemed to have produced art glass under the Hineri and Art Glass labels before closing in the 1990s. Iwatsu were known to have been based in Osaka in Japan, producing colourful art glass during the 1970s. The quality and style of their work rivalled and is often mistaken for, Italian Murano glass and Czech glass from the same period.
This exceptionally sculptural work of Italian mid-century Modern design by theBertoncello Ceramiche D'Arte (estd. c.1956 - c.1999). The form is that of a 3D crescent moon partially embedded into the surface the piece rests upon. Further elevating this piece is the richly silky glaze that invites touch, this glaze is one of two Bertoncello signature glazes called the Screziato. This particular shade is the Screziato Tabacco, a sumptuously glaze that is silky to touch, visually, it presents as a refined blending of rich, Golden Ochre, tinged with Sienna which gives added depth. Take a step back to view this piece as a whole and the glaze effect resembles leather or marbled stone.
Like many other Italian potteries that were popular during the mid-century period, little is known about the pottery but the exceptional quality of design undeniably speaks for itself.
This work would suit a space with Modernist, Minimalist and Mid Century décor, either as a standalone work of art ceramic or functionally as a vase or planter. The majestic size, refined form and overall condition of this piece makes it a rare find.

A BIT OF HISTORY Bertoncello Ceramiche D'Arte was founded in Schiavon, Italy around 1956 and was first known as LBP, an acronym created with the first letters of the founders surnames Mr Lini, Giovanni Bertoncello and Mr Pizzato.
For many years it was run solely by Giovanni Bertoncello (b. 1930 - d. 2011) and his brother Felice after Mr Lini left the company a few years after the pottery's founding. By the 1970s the pottery had grown to a staff of around 30 with Giovanni being the creative driving force behind the forms and glazes. In the early years Giovanni benefited from some support by a Venetian teacher, Mr. Boatto. Sadly not a lot is known about the company as all its catalogues and archives were destroyed when the company closed in 1999, however, the legacy of Bertoncello's design is undeniable in the history of Italian mid century art ceramics.
Bertoncello's signature designs are often very sculptural, with echoes from geometricism and modern architecture. Dramatic curves, rounded edges and corners, pierced forms and an organic feel are recurring features.
Shorter & Son, Art Deco Bauhaus Geometric Décor Raw Ocean Jasper Palette Planter, English, 1920s-30s

This striking work of Art Deco design is by the English pottery Shorter and Son (estd. c. 1900 - c. 1964). The sculpted and abstract jardiniere form firmly displays architectural influences of Art Deco Bauhaus geometricism. The overall shape is that of an oval slice that is an excellent canvas for the tactile décor.
The décor is an alternating pattern arranged with the triangular ridges. The horizontal ridges stagger in height as they wrap around the body and are further complimented by vertical ridges of staggered height. Further elevating this piece is the sumptuous glaze that is a blended flow of Cream, Caramel, Mocha brown tones which are offset by the Steel grey-blue. The glaze palette is similar to that of Raw Ocean Jasper. The visual appeal of this piece is timeless in style but also very much a piece of Art Deco history.
CONDITION Very Good. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The most notable wear are mild marks on the interior of the planter and a minor flake to the glaze on the underside of the base that are commensurable with the age of the piece. A BIT OF HISTORY Before the 1920s, Shorter and Son (c. 1900 - 1964) produced Edwardian Majolica ware, creating a broad range of domestic and ornamental ware such as jardinieres, umbrella holders, bowls and vases. From the 1920s onward, their range only broadened however, they would adapt their designs to the burgeoning influences of the period. The design of their tableware and accessories for example reflected the Art Deco influences of the greats such as Clarice Cliff and Mabel Leigh designed for Shorter and Son from 1933 to 1935.
Sadly, in the early 1960s, the company faced the death of a director Arthur Colley Shorter as well as the loss of a factory in Copeland Street to a road development scheme. Finally, there were significant expenses to convert to smokeless firing to conform with the Clean Air Act. These factors resulted in a decision to accept an offer from S. Fielding & Co. Ltd the owners of Crown Devon around 1964.

This delicious work of Swedish Mid Century Modern design is by Mari Simmulson (b. 1911- d. 2000) for Upsala Ekeby. Simmulson was a celebrated Swedish ceramics designer and ceramicist, known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics. This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Simmulson's Iris series, these earthenware works were designed around 1956 to 1957. The series is characterised by the delightfully organic blue and white stripes that are edged with Vanilla cream dots. There is firm delineation between the stripes and dots combined with the glossy glaze gives this piece a very touchable, tactile quality. The combination of the organic lines in black, the 'sprinkled' blue and pink speckled white glaze that is highlighted by the cheerful cream dots makes brings a joyful vibe to the overall piece.
This design is typically more difficult to source and the great condition this particular piece is in makes it an even rarer find. Stylistically, this work is timeless and is suitable for standalone display or functionally as a vase, a bowl or even as a tealight lantern.
CONDITION Excellent - there are no chips, cracks or repairs on the exterior of the vase. Mentioned for completeness: there is a single chip on the underside of the 'frog' (flowerholder) c. 1cm x 0.6cm that is not visible during display. The underside of the base is inscribed with Upsala Ekebys 'Ekeby' and Simmulson's 'ms' monogram as well as the model number '328'.

A BIT OF HISTORY Mari Peterson Särgava, ceramicist and textile artist (b. 1911- d. 2000) began her career with an internship with Arabia in Finland and it was during this time she married Gustaf Simmulson.
Simmulson moved to Sweden in 1944 and began working with Wilhelm Kåge at Gustavsbergs, staying until 1949. Her career took her to Uppsala Ekeby in 1949, where she designed vases, figures, reliefs and wall paintings, many of them noted as unique pieces. She became a leading designer at Uppsala Ekeby where she remained until the early 1970s. Simmulson also received commissions for public pieces including at Luleå Kol, Upplandsbanken and Pharmacia.

This charmingly chic and sculptural statement piece is of Seventies Modernist design by Dutch company Duif Keramiek. Crafted from white clay, the form of this piece is that of a polished globe shape that has been lightly 'shaved' at two sides and then rounded inwards to create the handle of the vase. The composition is finished with a 'stand-up collar' rim. The simple but elegant form makes this an excellent piece for the beautiful glaze that is a cream-beige accented with Nutmeg brown speckles. The imposing Statement size and design, combined with the palette and condition of the piece makes it an exceptionally rare find.

A BIT OF HISTORY Duif Keramiek (1956 – present) Duif Keramiek was founded by Joop Duivenvoorden who began his career by driving up and down the Netherlands selling flowers every day. It was this connection to flowers that helped him see great potential in mini vases. From this, he decided to start his own business and founded Duif’s Keramiek BV on 1 February 1956. Originally based in a garage, he began his one-man business selling mini vases to florists.
Duif’s developed into a modern ceramics business with 15 employees, with sales reps selling directly out of their lorries. Later, they started visiting clients and attending trade fairs across the Netherlands. Duivenvoorden’s two sons, John and Marcel, joined the family business in the early 1980s and in 1984, Duif’s opened a store at Cultra. Duif’s continued to experience success over the years, expanding to importing and exporting - not just ceramics but glassware too. The company became Duif’s international in 2016, with its import and export range extended to other materials such as metals and decorative products such as silk flowers.

This trio of sweetly adorable and hand-decorated bird sculptures is by leading Swedish ceramicist and designer Lisa Larson (b. 1931 - ) designed in the early 1990s. Originally designed for Larson's exhibition, the production of the figures were by Larsons pottery studio Keramikstudion Gustavsberg. Larson is famous for her Modernistic animal sculpture designs that has created many popular series such as Stora (Large Zoo), Lilla (Little Zoo), and Skansen (Nordic Zoo) for Gustavsberg Ceramics.
The elegantly rounded yet sleek forms with inquisitive expressions really bring these works to life. The trio's Modernistic forms are beautifully complimented by the silky smooth, semi-matte Warm Sand glaze with the bare minimum of detail depicted in the hand painted eyes or dustings of shadow. These sculptures are further elevated by the gold glaze detail. There are 4 Fenix designs in total, ranging from: Fingal (tallest), Gottfrid (roundest), Ossian and Tekla (smallest). These sculptures have been decorated in different colours including the Warm Sand of this trio, Cobalt blue and Charcoal black. Beautifully modern and charming, these works bring elevated simplicity and warmth to their surroundings.

Crown Devon, att. Ditmar Urbach, Art Deco Stylised Stitch Tree Décor Globe Lamp Base, 1920s-30s

This beautifully stylised work of Art Deco design was made by English pottery Crown Devon. Designed and made during Clarice Cliff's Bizarre era. The stylised tree and landscape verdure décor in this piece echoes that of which appears in Cliff's iconic Orange Roof Cottage series. The décor is further elevated by the addition of the tube-lined and tactile dotted 'stitching'. The origin of design can be attributed to the Czechoslovakian pottery Ditmar Urbach, from which Crown Devon developed its own interpretation.
The subtly striking décor sits against the canvas of the spherical globe form, displaying its timeless style and carrying its c. 85 years of Art Deco history.
CONDITION Very Good. There are 3 negligible chips to the glaze and light use wear to the underside of the base. Mentioned for completeness: there mild crazing all over. A BIT OF HISTORY Crown Devon Fieldings (1870 - 1982) The pottery was founded in 1870 by Simon Fieldings in Stoke on Trent but it would be 10 years later before they began to produce Majolica style pottery that was popular during the 1880s. Their product range began to expand in the 1890s, working with British United Clock company and they would continue to expand their product range as popularity flourished after successful world trade fairs in the 1900s. They sustained their success for over a century before sadly closing in 1982 at the time of the recession.
This striking and highly-tactile work of Art Deco design is by British company Beswick Pottery. The form of this piece is clean and elegant, following the classic design principles of Art Deco. The simple form is enhanced by the carved décor that is a pattern of stylised spirals, flora and verdure, interlaced with overlapping circular segments, arcs and curves. The refined design is further elevated by Beswick's Satin Matt glaze applied in a manner of techniques, from hand painted to daubed. The radiant palette consists of powdered sherbet tones; including Peach, Turquoise, Lemon Yellow, Sky and Cerulean Blue, Tan and Heather.
This beautiful work is stylistically timeless, contemporary but yet also very Art Deco making this work suitable for standalone display or for functional use.

A BIT OF HISTORY The Beswick firm was founded around the 1890s by John Beswick in Staffordshire, UK. His son James would take over upon his death, introducing a new range of jugs, bowls and vases decorated with new matt glazes. Responding to the modernist influence in design, many of these highly distinctive shapes were designed by Mr Symcox and decorated in 'satin matt' glazes using soft pastel colours running into each other or arranged in striking modern geometric blocks and lines. Beswick would go on to become known for their ceramic animal figures before being taken over by Royal Doulton in 1969 and finally closing in the early 2000s.
Though it is said these pieces will never be worth thousands, still, there is revived and growing interest in these Art Deco pieces as they survive in very good condition.

This striking and joyful work of 1980s Postmodern design is by British pottery Park Rose. Postmodern art and design are known for directly or indirectly borrowing from a range of design styles from the past. The form of this planter is a streamlined, Modern, and gently inverted lozenge shape that is an excellent canvas for the décor that echoes mid-century Op Art and Psy Art influences. The base glaze is a glossy white and juxtaposing this is the two, textured faces decorated in a cotton candy palette. A BIT OF HISTORY Park Rose Pottery 1982 - 2012 The Park Rose Pottery was founded by Anthony Kusmirek and Noel Rawson in 1982 with the original range consisting of vases, plant pot holders and ceramic lamp bases. The pottery went on to produce and sell a successful range of designer ware in their own right. Sadly, Park Rose Pottery ceased to trade in 2012 and it is unclear as to the reasons behind the closure.

The form of this vase is a streamlined, Modern, and gently inverted tube shape that is an excellent canvas for the décor that echoes mid-century Op Art and Psy Art influences. The base glaze is a glossy white and juxtaposing this is the two, textured faces decorated in a cotton candy palette. The palette of Powdered Apple green, Lemon yellow, and Marshmallow pink is applied in an Ombre manner, where the textured wave pattern leads the colours to fade into one another:
This charming piece is stylistically contemporary and yet also prominently of its time, this piece works excellently for standalone display and for functional use.
CONDITION Excellent. There are no chips or repairs. The most significant wear is movement marks that is on the underside of the base and mild crazing all over that are commensurable with the age of the piece. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. The underside of the base bears the stamp 'Park Rose, Bridlington, England'.

A BIT OF HISTORY Park Rose Pottery 1982 - 2012 The Park Rose Pottery was founded by Anthony Kusmirek and Noel Rawson in 1982 with the original range consisting of vases, plant pot holders and ceramic lamp bases. The pottery went on to produce and sell a successful range of designer ware in their own right. Sadly, Park Rose Pottery ceased to trade in 2012 and it is unclear as to the reasons behind the closure.

This elegant and charming work was designed and produced by Edelstein of Bavaria, Germany. Characteristic to mid-century Op Art or Pop Art design, the décor of this piece is very tactile and is likened to a stylised Sunburst or Supernova. The design is the feature on both sides of the vase, making this a double-faced piece. The form is also abstract to that of a traditional bottle form with the neck taking on mildly exaggerated curves to create a bevelled oval rim.
Stylistically timeless and subtle but yet very much of the Op Art movement, this piece is versatile enough to be displayed as a standalone piece or used functionally.
CONDITION Excellent. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. Mentioned for completeness, there is mild wear of movement marks on the underside of the base and also a spot where the glaze did not completely cover the vase that is not visible when the vase is upright. Please refer to photos as they form part of the condition report. The underside of the base bears Edelstein's stamp.

A BIT OF HISTORY Edelstein Bavaria was founded by Julius Edelstein in 1919 who right from the start specialised in porcelain tableware and decorative pieces. Edelstein enjoyed great success and by the mid-1920s employed up to 600 people. Sadly and like many other companies of the time, suffered from the world war. Though the company recovered to employing around 400 people during the 1950s, it would only last for another 2 decades until it was finally closed down in the 1970s.
