THE ITEM
This superb work of Swedish Modern design is a very rare design by Birger Åström (b. 1930 - ) for his pottery studio Bekå Keramik in Åsvägen, Sweden.

Decades before the rise of the present-day popularity in geometric animals, Åström had brought forth this softly geometric, Modernist sculpture. True to the roots of Modernist design, the simple form and its striking decor speaks to a beautiful expression of the natural materials. The subtly exaggerated curves, angles and arcs, creates a sophisticated set of expressive silhouettes and a very tactile form.

The base glaze decor is a sumptuous, semi-matte, Cool Cornflower blue. Overlaid onto the base glaze is mildly glossed and mottled tones of Pale Cornflower blue as well as Moss brown. The overall effect is similar to that of the figure being carved from unpolished Blue Moss Agate.

CONDITION
Excellent. No crazing as might be expected from a piece of this age and no damage. Please refer to photos as part of the condition report. The underside of the base of the vase is inscribed with Åström's signature.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Birger Åström (b. 1930 - ) Bekå Keramik (b. - )
Birger Åström was originally to become a pastry chef but instead, chose ceramics. Åström founded his own pottery studio in 1952 and it would be 1957 until he registered his studio as BeKå Ceramics in Åsvägen. Åström built the two ovens in the workshop himself and in his work, mixes clay as well as experiments with glazes. He is also known to make his own plaster moulds.

Early production consisted of functional items but over time he began to design and make ornamental ceramics in flint and stoneware as well as broadening out to sculptures. Åström has also completed a number of commissions for public decorations in concrete. Since 1991, he only works with ceramics as a hobby with a workshop on Hampnäsvägen in Själevad outside Örnsköldsvik.
