THE ITEM
This vibrant red dish was handblown by the Barovier & Toso glassworks, showcasing their ribbed design Cordonato d'Oro in their iconic ruby red glass with inclusions of gold leaf. The body of the dish blooms outwards from the stem of the base, ending in a ruffle rim.
The red glass is delicately trimmed with clear glass, exhibiting the dazzling golden Avventurine on the rim of the bowl, the base, as well as a trim where the body meets the stem of the base.
The outside of the body is adorned with clear glass 'blackberries' which are also delicately laced with gold Avventurine within the glass, creating a subtle sparkling effect which is enhanced when the piece catches bright light.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Barovier & Toso was formed in 1936 when two existing glasshouses merged - Vetreria Artistica Barovier and Ferro Toso. The company first traded as "Ferro Toso Vetrerie Artistiche Riunite S.A." until 1942, then transitioned to the name "Barovier & Toso" that it still operates under today. However, parent company Barovier was founded as a family business in 1295, making Barovier & Toso one of the oldest companies today.
Chief Designer Ercole Barovier created many well known designs such as Crepuscolo, Brillantati, Zebrati, Acanto, and the popular ribbed design Cordonato d'Oro, which typically featured red glass with inclusions of gold leaf.
