THE ITEM

This exquisitely intricate and delicate work of mid century Murano glass has been crafted using the Zanfirico technique. Zanfirico is the Venetian art glass technique that involves the stretching and twisting of fine glass canes to create beautiful spiral and lattice patterns.

This particular piece bears the colour palette characteristic to that of the Fratelli Toso glassworks. The gently twisted pink ribbons are trimmed with copper avventurine and placed in an alternating pattern in between the finer, net-like white glass.

CONDITION

A BIT OF HISTORY

Fratelli Toso glassworks was founded in 1854 by six brothers; Angelo, Giovann, Ferdinando, Carlo, Gregorio and Liberato. The brothers were joined by Ermanno Toso in 1924 who became artistic director. Fratelli Toso's artistic production has been broad during its 150 year history and has become particularly well known for Murrina and Millefiori production.

Zanfirico

The name Zanfirico derives from the surname of a 19th century Italian art dealer, Antonio Sanquirico, however the Zanfirico technique has been used as far back as the 16th century, when it was originally known as 'Filigrana a Retortoli'.
