THE ITEM
The Montignac series is a much sought after design, a limited edition decor produced between 1972 to 1973. This series was hand-painted to feature deer and bulls. and is understood to have been inspired by cave paintings discovered in Lascaux (SW France) which was open to the public between 1948-63.
This particular piece is in bottle vase form and bears a rich brown fat lava decor in bubbling crater lava glaze, the overall effect is how you might expect a prehistoric cave wall to appear visually and physically.
The stylised bull and deer are hand drawn with raised ridge outlines and painted with matte gloss glaze. The combination of the coarse and silky glaze makes this piece wonderfully tactile as well as visually, a statement piece.
This work of art would suit a Contemporary, Modernist or even Industrial decor themed room.
CONDITION
Excellent, no chips, scratches or cracks and has minimal wear on the base. Base is marked '281-30' and 'W.Germany'.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Alois Scheurich established his own ceramics factory in Kleinheubach in 1954 and the company would go on to become one of the largest manufacturers of ceramics in Germany, particularly during the 1950s to the 1980s. Scheurich exported more than any other ceramic company in Germany and offered the widest range of shapes and glazes. Some lines were specifically produced for foreign markets, such as the ‘Europline’ and mould designs marked ‘foreign’. The designer Heinz Siery is responsible for many of the forms which Scheurich produced. The company continues to produce to this day.
