THE ITEM
This elegant set of Art Deco design is by the Victoria company of Czech-Slovakia.
The pieces are handpainted in a stylish colour palette, reflecting the glamour of the Art Deco movement. Each cup is painted in a semi-lustre peach glaze, the exterior is painted in a pearlescent white lustre glaze and finished with a black glaze trim as well as handle. The saucer is handpainted in the same pearlescent glaze with the rim finished in black trim and the underside is left unpainted.
A BIT OF HISTORY
'Victoria' Schmidt & Company in Stara Role, Czechoslovakia was founded in 1883 by Lazarus and Rosenfeld Ltd. however, the company was sold within two years to Franz Schmidt, who would go on to give his name to the firm. Originally founded in the north-western Bohemian town of Altrohlau, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bohemia was separated from Austria to become part of Czechoslovakia at the end of First World War, Altrohlau changed its name to Stará Role.
Schmidt & Company ceased to exist in 1945, when they merged with the Altrohlau Porcelain Factories and the EPIAG factories to become known as Starorolský Porcelán.
CONDITION
Very Good. There are no chips or cracks to the cups or saucers. There is mild use wear in the glaze that is most evident in minor chips to the black glaze of the cup handles and pearl glaze of a few of the saucers. The underside of every cup and saucer is marked with the Victoria stamp of 'VICTORIA, Czecho-Slovakia' and crown that was in use between 1918 and 1938. Each cup is additionally stamped with the number '16'.

- Saucer: c. 1.1" / 2.7 cm tall x c. 5.4" / 13.6 cm diameter. Base diameter: c. 2.6" / 6.5 cm.
