THE ITEM
The infamous Honeycomb vase in gloss glaze, a collectors piece of Op Art porcelain.

Op art, short for optical art, is a style of visual art that uses optical illusions. Works are abstract, with many better known pieces created in black and white, typically giving the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibrating patterns, or of swelling or warping.

So with this piece, its all about the curvature of the overall vase and the shadows playing between the ridges, gaps and grid-lines of the honeycomb. Even focusing on one photo for a short while will give you an idea of what the effect is like with the real-piece and the tactile surface of vase itself explains why this vase is piece is so very much sought after.

A BIT OF HISTORY
The company was founded in 1872 as small decoration company under the name of 'Jaeger, Thomas & Co.' (1872 until 1898). During the first few years everything was fine but after various disputes with Jaeger regarding the product range and funding of special projects, Fritz Thomas decided to quit the company in 1898 to form 'Thomas & Ens'.

The near instantaneous success of Thomas & Ens caught the attention of Rosenthal and following Ens departure in 1907, Rosenthal moved to become the major shareholder in 1908 and Thomas was run as an independent subsidiary of Rosenthal.
