THE ITEM
A lovely example of Finnish art glass designed by Pertti Santalahti at Humppila glass works, the clear frosted textured glass 'petals' mimic ice and stone, often found in Finnish glass design.

The clear glass encases the rich amber brown base, supported by three small stud feet, and is from the Kivi 'stone' design series.

CONDITION

Excellent, very light wear commensurate with age, please see photos as part of condition report.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Humppila Glass (Finnish: Humppilan lasi) was founded in Finland in 1952, by three brothers: Jonni, Martti and Olavi Helander amd operated until 1979 when it over the Kumela factory and later became part of Nuutajarvi Glass Finland. Designers at Humppila during the 1970's included Pertti Santalahti, Kai Blomqvist, Tauno Wirkkala, Henrik Koivula and Vesa Antikainen.

Pertti Santalati (1941 - 2015) was a Finnish designer born in Helsinki, Santalahti studied at the School of Arts and Crafts at the sculpture department. He graduated as a designer in 1962. He worked as a designer at Kupittaan Savi, Nuutajärvi Glass, Alsterfors Glass Factory (Sweden), Arabica Ceramics Factory, Hackman Iittala. He became artistic director for Humppila in 1974.

Santalahti's works have been exhibited at joint exhibitions, including the Finnish Glass Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tampere and the Marjatta Gallery in Oslo. His works are in many collections, such as the Finnish Art Museums in Helsinki , the Finnish Glass Museum , the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tampere, the Finnish Museum of Applied Arts and abroad in Coburg, Germanyand the British Crafts Center in London.
