THE ITEM
This piece captures the spirit of discovery as intended by the 'Scavo' technique it was created with, the unearthing of a sculpted art glass vase from times gone by. The pink and white mottled translucent glass body bears inclusions of ash flecks from the crafting process, with a surface texture alternating between iridescence and abrasion.
This piece was finished with a single undulating clear handle and frosted knots as decoration. A search for Scavo pieces will show you that this technique can vary in execution and this piece is of fine and good quality.
The vase also displays its original label of made in Murano and originally being sold by Federica glass.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Scavo means 'dug up' and imitates ancient objects in the form and texture to those found in archaeological excavations. Inspired by excavations of ancient Roman glassware and pottery.
Alfredo Barbini and Cenedese invented this technique in the 50s. Later, in the 70s, the technique was taken up by Seguso Vetri d'Arte in a series that was designed by Giovanni Patrini.
During the crafting process, a mixture of several powders (carbonates nitrates, talc, silica, etc.) is dispersed on the glass surface. Then the object is heated up to 800-Celsius degrees. This creates an effect of transparency and colour. A second heating creates a unique surface texture.
