A BIT OF HISTORY
Close to one million people in Colombia earn a living directly or indirectly from the country’s vibrant arts and crafts sector. A significant contributor to the national economy, the sector counts some 350,000 artisans, approximately 60 percent of whom are from rural and indigenous areas.

Many skilled artisans are based in Pasto, the capital of Nariño, in southern Colombia. The city is located in the Atriz Valley on the Andes cordillera, at the foot of the Galeras volcano. Known for the technique of Barniz de Pasto, which uses a type of natural rubber which is coloured and then stretched over woodwork pieces; before the skilful artisan uses a special knife to cut and create the many beautiful designs that characterise this artistic technique. These skills would also be applied to tooling leather.
