THE ITEM

Brutal, isn't it ...? In the most carefully sculpted kind of way.
Though at first glance this beautiful piece of ceramic art might come across as primitive, the skill applied in its creation couldn't be more opposite.

The three stems remind me of an abstract Calla lily, each stem with a hollow in the centre that reaches the base of the sculpture and could be used as a Solifleur. The three stems are brought together by two horizontal discs and altogether as one piece, it resembles a piece of pottery from the Neolithic or possible Paleolithic age. Or perhaps, a sculpture of the prehistoric landscapes of sun bleached plateaus and caves.

The texture and 'glaze' of the sculpture is raw, and intentionally so, the pale russet brown clay is incised, marked with sgraffito to resemble the texture of stone. And finally, a layer of matte black glaze is washed over the surface and applied more thickly at the openings of each stem.
